Commissioners honor Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for its commitment and service to Hillsborough County.

During its May 7 meeting, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners presented a proclamation to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., honoring the organization's efforts and dedication to the community. Two of its alumnae chapters, Tampa Alumnae and Tampa Metropolitan Alumnae, along with the two collegiate chapters, Kappa Iota at the University of South Florida and Tau Iota at the University of Tampa, are instrumental in providing community service and support to residents.

In honor of the sorority's hard work and accomplishments, the Board declared May 7, 2025, as The Nineteenth Annual Delta Day. Karen Padgett Beard, President of Tampa Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, accepted the special recognition. After accepting the proclamation, Beard thanked the Board and said that the organization will always be dedicated to change and community prosperity.

"We are so proud to be able to be change agents to make…Hillsborough County, where we live, a better place for everyone," she said.The Board also presented the Ellsworth G. Simmons Good Government Award posthumously to Louis G. Betz Jr., who passed away in January. His family accepted the award on his behalf.
