Bragging rights and the highly coveted Golden Spoon trophy were at stake in the bake-off

The competition was fierce during the Spring Senior Bake Off, hosted by Hillsborough County Aging Services. Teams from six senior and dining centers measured, whipped, and poured to create delectable desserts to present to five judges from local bakery or food-industry businesses. From sheet cake to bundt cake to cheesecake, all were the result of teamwork that fostered camaraderie among the centers' members. Some entries were old family recipes that had been passed down for generations.

And the winner is...

A representative from each team gave a little background about their entry as judges thoughtfully sampled each entry one at a time and then completed scorecards. After briefly conferring among themselves and agreeing it was a tough decision, the judges announced the winning senior center. The Ruskin Senior Center will have their name engraved on the Golden Spoon trophy, winning the competition this year with their Turtle Cheesecake.

Inspired recipes

The inspiration for the Spring Senior Bake Off competition was a cookbook Aging Services published a few years ago made up of recipes submitted by their senior center members. The seniors are cooking and baking their way through the categories in the cookbook. Last year it was a soup competition. What will it be next year? Appetizers, entrees, side dishes? That's yet to be determined.
