Planning Commission to discuss county growth on Feb. 24
Hillsborough County is projected to grow by over 530,000 people by 2050. As one of the strategies to manage this population increase, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has directed the expansion of the Urban Service Area. This expansion will allow for more services, businesses, and homes to accommodate Hillsborough's growing population.
What is the Urban Service Area?
It is a designated area on the Future Use Land Map that facilitates orderly development in areas where the County already plans to provide public services such as sewer and water.
The BOCC has identified these areas for consideration:
Phase 1 - Extend the Urban Service Area boundary and change future land uses in these areas:
- Wimauma (Wimauma Village Residential-2 future land use)
- Balm (Residential Planned-2 future land use)
Phase 2 - Study these areas for infrastructure needs and funding options:
- Interstate 4 Corridor
- Little Manatee South
