Commissioners honor AdventHealth and Pepin Heart Institute for promoting heart health care and education
During its Feb. 5 meeting, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners declared Feb. 7 as Wear Red Day in Hillsborough County. Dr. Doug Ross, Chief Medical Officer of AdventHealth Tampa and Pepin Heart Institute, accepted the recognition.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, claiming the lives of more than 310,661 women in 2021. Feb. 7 is designated as Wear Red Day in Hillsborough County as part of a national movement to raise awareness about women's heart health, encourage prevention, and inspire women to prioritize their cardiovascular well-being. AdventHealth and Pepin Heart Institute have made significant impacts by educating people in the community about these factors, in addition to providing world-class care.
After receiving the proclamation, Ross thanked the Board for its support and for raising awareness on recognizing the signs of a heart attack, such as heavy chest discomfort, pain in the neck, jaw, or throat, and many others.
"I think that we really have to all be aware of these sort of different symptoms…that could be a heart attack in women," he said.
The Board also presented a commendation honoring the winners of the 2024 Minority & Small Business Enterprises Awards.
