Hillsborough County Solid Waste Services is thrilled to be a part of this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade, bringing a creative and community-centered project to the celebration!

For this year's float, the Waste Reduction and Recycling Team took on the challenge of creating a meaningful art installation for the back of the float. The result? A stunning 3D mural that pays tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while highlighting the importance of reusing materials that cannot be recycled.

This inspiring project came to life thanks to a collaboration with Creative Junk Therapy, a local creative reuse center, and the Environmental Science class at Dowdell Middle School. Creative Junk Therapy provided salvaged materials, giving students the tools they needed to turn waste into art.

Armed with imagination and a passion for sustainability, Dowdell Middle School students worked together to create a mural that's as beautiful as it is meaningful. Their artwork reflects Dr. King's legacy of unity and the transformative power of reimagining what's possible.

As the float makes its way through the parade, this one-of-a-kind mural is sure to inspire parade-goers to think differently about waste and see the beauty in repurposing materials. Hillsborough County Solid Waste Services is proud to showcase this creative effort and join the community in honoring Dr. King's vision.

Catch the float and the mural in the parade lineup during the Tampa MLK Day Parade at noon Jan. 20 at Cuscaden Park, 2900 N. 15th St., Tampa. The parade route ends at Middleton High School, 4801 N. 22nd St., Tampa.
