Cold weather shelters are a lifeline when the temperatures outside dip.
As winter temperatures drop, Hillsborough County is prepared to provide warmth and safety for residents in need. The County's Cold Weather Shelter partners open their doors on nights when the National Weather Service forecasts temperatures to dip to or below 40 degrees including wind chill between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Opening the shelters ensures that vulnerable populations have a refuge from the cold.
The shelters are activated in partnership with community organizations, local faith-based organizations, and nonprofit groups. They are staffed by dedicated volunteers who provide a warm, safe place to sleep, a hot meal, and often needed conversation.
The shelters are open to individuals and families, including those experiencing homelessness and residents whose homes may not have adequate heating. No pre-registration is required, and transportation assistance is available for those who need it.
To find out if shelters are open, residents can visit the Hillsborough County Cold Weather Shelters webpage or call the County's Customer Service Center at (813) 272-5900. Updates will also be shared through local media outlets and the County's social media channels.
