Hillsborough County Faces Further Flood Warnings in the Wake of Hurricane Milton:Read More

Hurricane Milton Update No. 21

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Oct. 10, 2024) - A power outage at one of Hillsborough County's largest pump stations has limited the ability of the County to manage stormwater levels effectively in the University Community area.

Duck Pond pump station, located near the University of South Florida, is the County's largest stormwater pump station with a capacity of 50 to 90 cubic feet per second (CFS). This pump station's purpose is to protect the low-lying areas in the University area from flooding during significant rainfall events up to a 25-year storm.

The pump station lost power Wednesday night when Hurricane Milton's historic rains of about 10.7 inches came overnight. Hurricane Milton's rains exceeded the 100-year flood event and flooded the University area. Pumping capacity is limited at this time. Hillsborough County is working to restore pumping and coordinating with the City of Tampa on pumping operations as to not compound the flooding downstream.
