The inaugural Patriots Palate cooking demonstration will showcase Fresh-from-Florida crops

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Sept. 23, 2024) - Military families who are newly stationed at MacDill Air Force Base will learn how to prepare easy meals with Fresh from Florida ingredients during a cooking demonstration hosted by Hillsborough County Extension Service.

The inaugural Patriots Palate cooking event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 5, 3810 W. Kennedy Blvd., Tampa, FL 33609. Military families can often feel overwhelmed when settling into a new area. Patriots Palate aims to ease some of the stress that comes with cooking meals at home and teach military families creative ways to incorporate locally grown fruits and vegetables in their kitchen.

Chef Justin Timineri with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will lead the cooking demonstration for 20 military families during MacDill Welcome Week. Chef Timineri will profile Fresh-from-Florida crops, share when they are in season, and show attendees how to prepare easy and nutritious meals using the locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Get your taste buds ready because the menu is delectable! The first course will be vegetable fritters with yogurt sauce. The main dish will be a Florida seafood boil including shrimp, lobster, clams, sausage, chicken, potatoes, and corn. The last dish will be a unique take on the classic Florida dessert, Key Lime Pie, using fruits that are currently in season like mango, dragon fruit, papaya, and passion fruit.

Hillsborough County Extension Service is hosting the inaugural Patriots Palate event in partnership with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and Blue Star Families.
