Hillsborough County, Fla. (Aug. 9, 2024) - Heavy rains during the resurfacing project on North Howard Avenue have pushed the closure through the end of next week. The road is expected to reopen on Friday, Aug. 16.
The closure is necessary for the full-depth reconstruction and repaving of North Howard Avenue between West Kennedy Boulevard and West Fig Street.
Crews are nearing the end of a large resurfacing project on North Howard Avenue from West Kennedy Boulevard to West St. Louis Street near Columbus Drive to enhance transportation mobility and increase safety.
All associated work related to the road closure is scheduled to be completed in August 2024. As with all construction projects, inclement weather may affect the scheduled operations and overall duration.
Detours are posted to assist motorists travelling near the work zones. Residents should follow the marked detours to get around the closure.
The project includes full resurfacing, rectangular rapid-flashing beacons (RRFBs), reduced speed limits, sidewalk improvements, and new signage and pavement markings.
Pedestrian safety improvements and multimodal accommodations are included in the scope of this project. RRFBs are being installed at West Gray Street, West Cass Street, West Spruce Street, West Cherry Street, West Palmetto Street, and West Beach Street. These safety features are pedestrian-activated and designed to help pedestrians and cyclists safely cross the street.
As the project is in the City of Tampa, city officials also have requested a speed limit reduction from 40 mph to 35 mph.
