Residents can expect a more reliable, robust, and future-ready emergency response system.

Hillsborough County's 911 Office is moving to the Next Generation Core Services (NGCS) solution to provide additional layers of redundancy, resiliency, and recovery from disasters. This innovative approach aims to improve emergency response capabilities and provide residents with timely and efficient assistance, even in the face of service outages or natural disasters. In addition, residents can expect a more reliable, robust, and future-ready emergency response system.

What is NGCS?

NGCS is specifically tailored for public safety and designed to modernize and strengthen existing 911 infrastructure. One of the key features of this system is the implementation of a backup or secondary call-handling system. This measure plays a vital role in reducing downtime during unexpected service interruptions, helping to make sure that emergency calls are consistently answered.

FCC's Push Toward NG911

On June 8, 2023, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to facilitate the nationwide transition to Next Generation 911 (NG911) services. Unlike the current 911 analog legacy system, NG911 utilizes an Internet Protocol-based format and routing. In the notice, the FCC proposes rules requiring wireline, interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and Internet-based Telecommunications Relay Service providers to deliver 911 calls. This includes associated location information, which must be done when the designated public safety answering point is ready to receive NG911 calls for a smooth and consistent transition.

Benefits to Residents

  • Increased Reliability and Redundancy: The NGCS solution ensures that there is always a backup system in place, reducing the risk of service outages and improving the overall reliability of emergency response services.
  • Enhanced Resiliency: By utilizing an IP-based format, NG911 is more resilient to disasters and allows for quicker recovery and continued operation during and after emergencies.
  • Futureproofing: The scalable and adaptable nature of NGCS means that the system can evolve with technological advancements for long-term improvements without the need for frequent overhauls.
