The University Area Community Center Complex will become Victor Crist Community Center Complex
Hillsborough County, Fla. (June 14, 2024) - On Tuesday, June 18, Senator Victor Crist, a former Hillsborough County Commissioner from 2010 to 2018, will be recognized for his over 40 years of outstanding dedicated leadership and service to the community. There will be a renaming dedication of Hillsborough County's University Area Community Center Complex to become the Victor Crist Community Center Complex.
The 10 a.m. ceremony and sign unveiling at 14013 N. 22nd St., Tampa, FL 33613, will be held in front of the main building and feature remarks from numerous Hillsborough County leaders, staff, and area residents.
Crist has dedicated most of his adult life to improving the quality of life for people in the University Community, the neighborhoods that surround the University of South Florida's Tampa campus, which historically has had a large low-income, at-risk population.
In the early 1980s, Crist started the Off Campus Housing Alliance to help ensure the availability of good, clean, and affordable housing. In the early 1990s, he became president of the U.S.F. Area Community Civic Association, Inc., of which he is still president today. In 1992, Crist led the area's Hillsborough County Federal Weed and Seed Partnership Initiative to weed out crime and seed the area with needed educational and social services. In 1997, Crist founded the University Area Community Development Corporation, Inc., with the mission to improve infrastructure, grow affordable housing, secure adequate health care and education, and foster family and personal self-development. In 1998, Crist established the University Area Community Center Complex to house the community redevelopment initiative.
Now - after 40 plus years - as a result, the lives of hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged residents have been improved and changed for the better.
