During the June 5, 2024, Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting:
The Board presented the 2024 Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award to Bloomingdale High School senior Cooper Hinson. Over his high school baseball career, Cooper helped lead his team to multiple championships while maintaining a 5.84 GPA and participating in numerous clubs and charitable organizations.
Honorable mentions were given to Leto High School’s Demetrios Passalaris and Durant High School’s Blaine Rowland.
Commissioners declared June 6 as Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day to remember and honor loved ones who have lost their lives to fentanyl and to raise awareness about the threat that the drug poses within the community and the nation.
Commissioners approved a 2024 budget amendment to appropriate $19,716,000 in federal funds and realign $7,964,000 in County funds for the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration Grant Award for the Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant Program. This project will improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and drivers at approximately 22 locations throughout Hillsborough County.
The Board approved a resolution allocating up to $450,000 in funding to United Food Bank & Services of Plant City, Inc. for demolition and construction costs for a new replacement warehouse and office building. The project will allow for the increased collection and distribution of food and other items to the community.
Commissioners adopted a resolution authorizing the placement of signs in County rights-of-way from June 14 - July 5, 2024, for the Catch the Spirit & Celebrate America - 4th of July Festival at the Hillsborough County Fair Grounds. The goal is to increase traffic safety to and from the fairgrounds during the event.
The Board received a report regarding an indoor sports facility for basketball and volleyball and an outdoor sports complex for baseball and softball in Hillsborough County.
Staff identified multiple potential locations for construction of the facilities, including in East County near the Tournament Sportsplex, on MOSI property, and in the Westshore area.
A majority of commissioners voted for staff to continue to research possible locations for the facilities, talk with landowners, developers, and nearby business owners, as well as look into funding options.
The Board will discuss the next steps at a future meeting.
