The American Heart Association gift means all County parks with a sports league will have an automated external defibrillator, or AED, nearby

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Dec. 15, 2023) - When it comes to a cardiac emergency, the difference between life and death can be measured in seconds. That's why the American Heart Association's support in acquiring 50 automated external defibrillators for Hillsborough County parks is so important.

The donation means all 46 Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation parks and sports complexes with youth or adult recreational leagues will have at least one automated external defibrillator, or AED, on site. AEDs are used to deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to bring a person's heart back into rhythm after a cardiac event.

A cardiac arrest can happen at any time, and having timely access to an AED is particularly important at parks and sports complexes where large numbers of people routinely play high-intensity sports, often in a high-heat, high-humidity environment. Having an AED administered within three minutes of a cardiac emergency can significantly improve chances for a successful recovery.

On Saturday, Dec. 16, representatives of the American Heart Association and Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation will present an AED and a CPR kit to the Rural Youth Soccer Association. The presentation will be at the Wimauma Civic Center, 5705 Hillsborough St., Wimauma, FL 33598.
