Learn how to turn an invasive plant species into a useful tool!

Join a park ranger in a class to learn how to turn an invasive plant frequently found throughout Florida into a useful product!

This will be a hands-on instructional class encouraging the extirpation of invasive Caesar weed (Urenia lobata) from Florida. You'll learn about the plant's history, life cycle, identifying features, and uses. Weather depending, the class will begin in the field with identifying and removing invasive Caesar weed plants. While doing so, you'll discuss the history and biology of the plant, its invasive status and detriment to local ecology, and how to remove it.

In the second half of class, you will learn about Caesar weed's original intended use as a cordage/ rope-making crop. You will learn what part of the plant is useful in this regard, several methods to process this fiber, and learn to twist fibers by hand into surprisingly strong and useful string or even rope.

All supplies will be provided and you'll be able to take cordage made home.
