Join Ranger Jonathan in a class to learn how to turn an invasive plant frequently found throughout Florida into a useful product!

Participants will learn about the invasive species Cogon Grass, and then learn how to utilize it to make attractive and useful baskets. Participants will learn to identify Cogon and distinguish it from other native grasses. We will discuss how it spreads, and its impact on local ecology, as well as methods to exterminate it. If weather and timing permit, participants will locate and remove some Cogon Grass from the park and study the various parts and structures of the plant.

Next participants will learn about coil baskets, and how Cogon Grass can be dried and used to make these baskets. Participants will get to complete (or at least start) a coil basket with provided materials, take it home, and will be directed to information resources for future projects.
