Senior Citizen Exemption – Water and Wastewater Utility Bills

Purpose

To establish a policy authorizing qualified customer, 62 years of age and older on a fixed income, to pay water and wastewater bills beyond the normal delinquent date.

Policy

It is the policy of the Board of County Commissioners to grant, upon application by qualified customers with a good payment record, a water and wastewater utility bill senior citizen exemption. The exemption will allow payment at payment at pay agents after the normal delinquent date but no later than the fifth day of the month succeeding the regular due date month. The credit rating of the qualified citizen will not be affected. The exemption will not change the date of the past due notice which is the date when the customer is notified service will be interrupted if the past due bill is not paid.

A senior citizen exemption qualification applies only to customers 62 years of age and older on a fixed income and whose water and wastewater utility bill is normally received between the first (1st) and the eighteenth (18) day of the month. A fixed income is defined as income derived from Social Security benefits, private retirement benefits, or disability retirement benefits, normally received within the first five (5) days of the month.

Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the Department of Public Utilities to put into effect the policy approved and adopted by the Board of County Commissioners.
