Policy Regarding Action Hillsborough County Will Take When the United States President Declares a National Day of Mourning

Purpose

To have a standing policy regarding what actions Hillsborough County will take in response to a declaration of a National day of Mourning for the passing of a former or current United States President.

Policy

The Board of County Commissioners hereby declares that when the President of the United States declares a National Day of Mourning for the passing of a former or current United States President, Hillsborough County, as an expression of public sorrow, will honor and observe this day in the following ways:

OPTIONS:

  • Fly the United States Flag at half staff;
  • Issue a formal proclamation to commemorate the life and heroism of the deceased President;
  • Set a specific time for a moment of silent reflection on the life and heroism of the deceased President;
  • Host a display in honor of the deceased President in the public library when resources are available;
  • Carry coverage of the funeral ceremonies, or other programs about the deceased President, on HTV when available space permits.

This policy may be waived by a vote of the Board of County Commissioners in appropriate circumstances.

Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the County Administrator to implement this policy and decide which option(s) is/are the more suitable action(s) to take upon the declaration of a National Day of Mourning.
