Take important steps toward protecting yourself from identity theft and cybercrime
Residents can safely dispose of sensitive paper documents and unwanted electronic devices while learning simple ways to reduce their risk of identity theft and cybercrime.
Whether it's an old bank statement tucked away in a filing cabinet or a retired laptop collecting dust in a closet, outdated documents and electronics can contain valuable personal information that criminals can exploit.
To help residents securely dispose of these items, Hillsborough County Code Enforcement will host ShredFest: Fright-Free Data Disposal from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026, at Veterans Memorial Park, 3602 N. U.S. 301, Tampa, FL 33619.
Held during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, this free, drive-thru event encourages residents to protect their personal information by securely destroying confidential paper documents and responsibly recycling eligible electronic devices that may still contain sensitive data.
Hillsborough County Code Enforcement reminds residents that protecting yourself from cybercrime isn't just about what you do online. Old paper records and electronic devices can contain the information criminals need to steal identities, access accounts, or create convincing phishing scams. Rather than tossing these items in the trash, participating in secure disposal ensures personal information is destroyed and thus protected.
Paper documents often include account numbers, addresses, insurance information, and other personal details that scammers can use to create realistic emails, text messages, or phone calls. Likewise, computers, phones, and storage devices retain personal files and data even after they've stopped being used.
In addition to securely disposing of sensitive materials, residents are encouraged to strengthen their online security by following four simple cybersecurity practices:
- Use strong, unique passwords and a password manager
- Enable multifactor authentication, when possible
- Recognize and report scams
- Keep device software updated
