Board recognizes Mac Parkman Foundation for raising awareness on the risks of Repetitive Brain Trauma.
During its Sept. 2 meeting, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners presented a commendation recognizing The Mac Parkman Foundation for its dedication to advancing brain health. Bruce and Perri Parkman, founders of the Mac Parkman Foundation, accepted the recognition.
Since its founding, the Mac Parkman Foundation has been dedicated to protecting brains and saving lives by advancing awareness, research, education, and advocacy surrounding brain health and the prevention and treatment of brain injuries. The nonprofit organization was named after Maconnell "Mac" Parkman, who tragically passed away on Sept. 24, 2020, after fighting mental health issues that were related to a series of three known concussions he sustained in wrestling, football, and other concussive activities. The Mac Parkman Foundation continues to strive for creating a safer environment in sports and military service, improving treatment for those athletes and veterans affected, and to ensure a healthier future for all.
After accepting the commendation, Bruce Parkman thanked the Board for the recognition, which honored his son, and said the organization's Third Annual International Summit on Repetitive Brain Trauma will play a vital role in raising awareness on the risks.
"We're going to keep this summit here for three reasons. Number one: Hillsborough County rocks and we got amazing commissioners that support us," he said. "Number two: there is not a lot of medical research-oriented summits here, and third: Hillsborough County just basically rocks. And that is why we're keeping it here."
