Older adults from across Hillsborough County gathered at the Oaks at Riverview Community Center to celebrate healthy aging and community service
Hundreds of adults age 50 and older gathered at the Oaks at Riverview Community Center for a vibrant celebration of Older Americans Month, hosted through a longstanding partnership between Hillsborough County Aging Services and the Tampa Housing Authority. Centered around this year's national theme, "Championing Your Health," the celebration honored older adults not only for longevity, but for their continued leadership, service, mentorship, and impact across Hillsborough County.
Event organizers emphasized that Older Americans Month is a time to celebrate older adults who continue to uplift and strengthen their communities through service and compassion.
The annual celebration recognized two outstanding seniors for their dedication to supporting fellow older adults through volunteer service, mentorship, wellness programs, and community outreach: Gloria Pate and Vyline Beaupierre.
Vyline Beaupierre, a member of the Gardenville Senior & Dining Center, actively recruits volunteers and supports community outreach efforts designed to connect and assist seniors. It's an effort Beaupierre says goes a long way. "I make it my business to advocate for seniors," said Beaupierre. "Helping people is my life."
Gloria Pate, a member of the Ruskin Senior Center since 2016, serves as a line dance instructor who encourages older adults to remain active. Pate also stressed the importance of caring for and supporting fellow seniors in the community. "We have a lot of older folks in need of care," said Pate. "I always try and let other people know that I care."
Championing Your Health
Each year, Hillsborough County joins the nation in observing Older Americans Month, recognizing the invaluable contributions of older adults while reaffirming a commitment to supporting their health and independence. This year's theme, Championing Your Health, underscores prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging. County officials say the theme encourages seniors to advocate for their health, access preventive care, and make informed decisions.
For Pate, the phrase "Championing Your Health" is all about moving forward.
"Life is beautiful, when things go wrong, I just go with it."
