Commissioners also honor Problem-Solving Court Month and Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month to kick off May 20 meeting

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners presented three proclamations at its May 20 meeting to celebrate the people and programs that help improve - and even save - lives in Hillsborough County.

Commissioners honored first responders who provide emergency medical services (EMS) with a proclamation celebrating EMS week in Hillsborough County from May 17 through May 23. Emergency medical services provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week. EMS dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury, as well as fill healthcare gaps by providing important, out-of-hospital care, including preventative medicine, follow-up care, and access to telemedicine. Members of EMS teams, whether career or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to enhance their lifesaving skills.

The Board also recognized May as Problem-Solving Court Month with a proclamation. Problem-Solving Courts address the underlying factors that contribute to justice-system involvement, rather than solely focusing on punishment, and they provide evidenced-based treatment, judicial supervision, accountability, and support services tailored to individual needs. The Board applauded the efforts of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit and the dedicated judges, prosecutors, treatment providers, case managers, law enforcement officers, mentors, and community partners who work collaboratively to support participants on their path to recovery.

In addition, the Board honored the significant contributions of the Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander American communities who call Hillsborough County home with a proclamation celebrating May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. The proclamation cited Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander Americans' contributions to the county's vibrant diversity, expansion of the region's prosperity, and enrichment of residents' lives by sharing ideas, customs, and wisdom.
