Interactive event invites aspiring artists to learn design from a nationally recognized illustrator

Kids and young adults with a passion for art and storytelling will have a unique opportunity to learn from a celebrated graphic novelist next week during an event hosted by the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative.

New York Times bestselling author Johnnie Christmas will lead an interactive drawing workshop on Wednesday, April 8, at Jimmie B. Keel Regional Library. Organizers say it's a great way for participants to meet and learn from an award-winning graphic novelist.

"For the library, it's amazing to have somebody visit whose books are on our shelves," said a representative for library. "We want to harness these relationships so that we can continue to build up the community."

What participants can expect

"An Evening with Johnnie Christmas: Learn to Draw Characters in Motion" will guide participants through the process of creating realistic characters in action. The event offers hands-on experiences designed to inspire creativity, while teaching illustration techniques. All materials will be provided, making the program accessible for beginners as well as experienced artists.

"Participants will get to listen to a New York Times bestselling graphic novelist talk about his process in drawing," said event organizers. "They will hopefully gain some new skills, or new ways to draw for those who are already an artist."

Who is Johnnie Christmas

Johnnie Christmas is a No. 1 New York Times bestselling graphic novelist and the author of "Gamerville." His 2022 novel debut, "Swim Team," earned a spot on the National Book Awards longlist as well as other industry honors. His work aims to introduce younger audiences to the power of visual storytelling, blending engaging narratives with compelling artwork. Attendees will get a behind-the-scenes look at how a bestselling graphic novel is created.

"Participants will be able to expand on their own skills and knowledge on how something is made," said event organizers. "It's kind of like getting a little secret behind how a book is made."

Copies of both "Gamerville" and "Swim Team" will be available for participants who attend the event. For those interested in art, storytelling, or simply trying something new, organizers say this is a chance to learn directly from a professional in a fun, interactive setting.

"The community is always excited when we have an author coming," said a representative with the library. "All of our events are free, so participants don't have to purchase his book to speak with him."

Funded by the Friends of the Jimmie B. Keel Library, the event is free and open to the public. Learn more about the event as well as Johnnie Christmas' accomplishments. Check out the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative for a look at upcoming events free to the public.
