Hillsborough County, Fla. (Jan. 26, 2026) - Hillsborough County is designing safety improvements to the East 131st Avenue corridor in the University Area from Nebraska Avenue to Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.
This section of East 131st Avenue sees high multimodal transportation use, including pedestrian, bicycle, and wheelchair traffic. An in-person public engagement is Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m. The online engagement will be open from Jan. 27 to Feb. 10.
The corridor safety improvements will be designed for speed management and improved multimodal safety along East 131st Avenue, including:
- Bicycle, pedestrian and transit access improvements
- Intersection safety improvements such as raised intersection at 19th Street
- Addition of multiple mid-block raised pedestrian crossings with rapid flashing beacon warning lights closely aligned to HART transit stops
- Shared bicycle lanes
- Access management
These improvements will help reduce traffic congestion and improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists, as well as provide better accommodation for buses.
The $3.3 million project is currently in the design phase with a projected completion in 2027.
East 131st Street is a high-traffic corridor through a community that uses the roadway on foot and on bicycle to get around.
