Facility to serve residents and businesses in South Progress Village, second new station to start construction this year

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Nov. 4, 2025) - Hillsborough County Fire Rescue will host another fire station groundbreaking at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6.

This week, County leaders will host a groundbreaking ceremony for Fire Station No. 48 at 7412 South 78th St., Riverview, FL 33578.

Fire Station No. 48 will be located in South Progress Village, an area that has seen residential growth and has a thriving industrial business sector. For this location, Hillsborough County completed a land swap with Mosaic to acquire the property.

Like Fire Station No. 47 in Ruskin, which County leaders broke ground on last week, Fire Station No. 48 will have a two-bay design with a fire engine and rescue ambulance. The station will have at least five full-time firefighters per 24-hour shift.

Planned to be completed in October 2026, the fire station is designed to provide the latest resources, equipment, and tools to allow firefighters to serve the residents and businesses in the area.

It will include a decontamination area, where showers and a laundry room are accessible to firefighters returning from fighting a fire before they enter the living quarters. These facilities help eliminate carcinogens, which is important in keeping firefighters healthy from cancer-causing smoke and residue common in modern fires. It will have a station alerting alarm system to alert firefighters of an emergency. The station alerting alarm system gradually increases its alert sounds to gently awake firefighters while sleeping. This approach promotes the physical and mental health of firefighters, as opposed to a loud and jarring alarm system.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue firefighters respond to an estimated 140,000 emergency calls a year throughout the county. The Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Master Plan has identified the need to build 20 stations over the course of the next 24 years.

The new fire station will help meet the public safety and emergency response needs for residents and businesses in a growing area of Hillsborough County. The full-service fire station serves as an example of Hillsborough County's commitment to public safety, and it will offer residents and businesses in the area enhanced protection and improved response times.
