Department commemorates observance with chess, billiards, and Rummikub tournaments, and a Hispanic Heritage Celebration for the ages

Hillsborough County, Fla. (Sept. 4, 2025) - Hillsborough County Aging Services is celebrating National Senior Center Month in September with a number of programs, activities, and fun designed to inspire seniors.

This month, Aging Services will host a number of tournaments at its senior centers, culminating in separate championships that bring together finalists from nine senior centers.

  • Chess Championship Tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at the Lutz Senior Center, 112 First Ave. N.W., Lutz, FL 33549.
  • Billiards Championship Tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at the Town 'N Country Senior Center, 7606 Paula Dr., Tampa, FL 33615.
  • Rummikub Championship Tournament will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at the Oaks Senior Center, 101 E. Kirby St., Tampa, FL 33604

The grand finale of the National Senior Center Month is the Hispanic Heritage Celebration from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at The Regent, 6437 Watson Rd., Riverview, FL 33578. The celebration includes music, dancing, fashion, art, entertainment, and Latin food to honor National Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. The event encourages older adults of all cultures to relish the vibrant Hispanic culture. More than 400 active adults age 50 and older are expected to join the celebration.

Hillsborough County Aging Services engages seniors all year long. Aging Services has seven senior centers, and 14 dining and activity centers where hundreds of seniors participate in programs and activities on a daily basis.

Seniors meet each weekday, create friendships, and bond through a number of programs and activities, including painting clubs, art classes, fitness training, Tai Chi, sewing club, Bingo, board games, garden club, book club, dominoes, and chess club, to name a few.

National Senior Center Month is an annual September event organized by the National Council on Aging. It highlights the important role of senior centers and how they help connect older adults to other seniors and programs that promote health and well-being. The goal of National Senior Center Month is to showcase what is offered to people 50 and over and encourage residents to explore all the programs in Hillsborough County.
