Hillsborough County, Fla. (June 12, 2025) - Hillsborough County is celebrating the 10th graduating class of the Self Employment Workshop Program (SEWP), a project designed by Hillsborough County Entrepreneur Services in collaboration with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Hillsborough County and the City of Tampa to empower Hillsborough residents to start their own business.
Over the years, SEWP has helped dozens of people understand what it takes to turn their talents and skills into a small business that grows and employs others.
The SEWP kicks off with a Small Business Idea Camp. The camp is one part of the 38-hour program, which encourages and helps aspiring entrepreneurs understand the entrepreneurial mindset necessary to operate a successful business. The Small Business Idea Camp is followed by workshops on the how-to's of banking and finance, bookkeeping basics, marketing, and concluding with a six-week course to complete a business plan. All participants work with a dedicated business consultant along the way and leave with a complete business plan to guide business development.
Participants who attend all classes have the extra benefit of a monetary stipend provided by a sponsor at the conclusion of the program. The SEWP is designed to inspire and engage new and future business owners in the fundamentals of entrepreneurial thinking.
The SBDC at Hillsborough County is hosted at Hillsborough's Entrepreneur Collaborative Center in Ybor City.
