Well-renowned medical center ranked #1 Hospital in the Nation for transplants by volume in 2024.
During the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners' April 16 meeting, commissioners presented a commendation to Tampa General Hospital, honoring the medical center for being ranked #1 Hospital in the Nation for transplants by volume in 2024. Dr. Benjamin Mackie, Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Center at Tampa General Hospital, accepted the recognition on the hospital's behalf.
Throughout its history, Tampa General Hospital has achieved tremendous milestones in organ transplants. The hospital is one of the top organ transplant centers in the country, having performed more than 13,000 adult solid organ transplants, including the state's first successful heart transplant in 1985. Having completed 889 transplants between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2024, Tampa General Hospital is ranked first in the nation for performing this complex procedure, completing the most of any transplant center in the nation that year, as well as setting a new national record for transplant procedures in a single year.
After receiving the commendation, Mackie thanked the Board and said that the latest achievement was due to a strong sense of teamwork at the hospital.
"We have hundreds of team members that participate in the care of transplant patients at Tampa General," he said. "And everybody plays an integral role in making that happen."
The Board also presented a proclamation declaring April 2025 as Donate Life Month, in addition to honoring chief environmental scientist Michael S. Flannery with the 2025 Theodore Roosevelt Hillsborough Forever Conservation Award.
