As tax season looms and the risk of identity theft intensifies, Hillsborough County residents are urged to take advantage of a free and secure solution. Hillsborough County Consumer & Veterans Services is set to host ShredFest 2024, an event offering free document shredding and electronic device disposal to safeguard residents against identity theft for the eighth year in a row.

Scheduled for Saturday, March 2, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 3602 U.S. Hwy. 301 N., Tampa, FL 33619, ShredFest 2024 serves as a public service to coincide with National Consumer Protection Week, running from March 3 through March 9.

Helps prevent identity theft

In an effort to combat identity theft, on-site document shredding will be available for up to three copy-paper-sized boxes or kitchen-sized trash bag containers per vehicle. The event encourages the use of white or clear bags over black trash bags. Residents are advised to consult IRS guidelines regarding the retention of tax records. Additional items recommended for shredding include old bank documents, unnecessary bills and receipts, expired insurance policies, and sensitive medical records.

Shred more than just paper documents

ShredFest 2024 goes beyond paper documents, offering free electronic "e-shredding" to thwart cyber identity theft. The process, known as IT asset disposition (ITAD), ensures the secure and environmentally sustainable disposal of unwanted devices containing data. Attendees are encouraged to drop off old cell phones, personal computers, laptops, tablets, and hard drives, all of which will be securely destroyed by an industry-approved and certified recycler.

Quick drop-off

The event will be organized as a convenient, drive-thru drop-off, ensuring attendees remain in their vehicles for seamless service. Consumer protection experts will be on-site to address any questions or concerns. All services are free and provided on a first-come, first-served basis during the one-day event. No commercial shredding will be permitted.

Importantly, Veterans Memorial Park and its monuments will remain open and accessible throughout the ShredFest 2024 event.
