Learn to reduce your family's risk of fire and burns
As temperatures begin to drop, many homeowners are plugging in their space heaters to keep warm and cozy. While space heaters provide a quick fix for cooler temperatures, they can be dangerous for you and your family if not used properly.
The National Fire Protection Association reports that heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires, home fire injuries, and the third leading cause of home fire deaths in the United States. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and related injuries.
Safety tips
- If you plan to use a portable electric space heater, make sure to follow these tips and recommendations:
- Purchase a heater with the seal of an independent testing laboratory
- Keep the heater at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn, including people
- Choose a heater with a thermostat and overheat protection
- Place the heater on a solid, flat surface
- Make sure your heater has an auto shut-off to turn the heater off if it tips over
- Keep space heaters out of the way of foot traffic, and never block and exit
- Keep children away from the space heater
- Plug the heater directly into the wall outlet, and ever use an extension cord
- Space heaters should be turned off and unplugged when you leave the room or go to bed
