Providing coordination and partnership among governmental units, commercial enterprises, and citizen groups

View Local Mitigation Strategy Working Group Events

The Local Mitigation Strategy Working Group (LMS WG) serves as the community-wide, all-hazards stakeholder committee at the core of the County’s unified multi-jurisdictional mitigation planning process. The LMS WG consists of governments entities, industry partners, citizen groups, and residents. The coordination and partnership effort help reduce countywide risks from natural and man-made disasters and build a stronger, more resilient community for all.

Duties

  • Assessing Risks: Identifying which areas, people, and facilities are most vulnerable to hazards such as flooding, hurricanes, or wildfires.
  • Maintaining Project Lists: Keeping an updated list of local proposed and active projects that help prevent or reduce disaster damage.
  • Supporting Outreach and Coordination: Working with partners on related efforts such as the Floodplain Management Plan, Community Rating System, and disaster recovery grant programs.

Guidance

We developed LMS to reduce or eliminate all forms of losses from natural or man-made disasters. The goal is to establish and maintain an ongoing process that continually assesses potential disasters, develops corresponding mitigation techniques, and incorporates preparedness and response into the consciousness of the entire community.

Members

The LMS Working Group consists of:

  • The County Hazard Mitigation Section
  • Hillsborough County Emergency Management
  • Emergency management/hazard mitigation representatives from Tampa, Plant City, Temple Terrace
  • Members of other municipal departments such as public works and health, representatives from local education institutions, private sector, as well as volunteer citizens.

The group also includes representatives from interested private and civic organizations, trade and commercial support groups, property owners associations, water management districts, regional planning councils, independent special districts, non-profit groups, chambers of commerce, economic development agencies, private utilities and communications companies, and large employers.
